纸上得来终觉浅
zhǐ shàng dé lái zhōng jué qiǎn
绝知此事要躬行
jué zhī cǐ shì yào gōng xíng

The ancients spared no effort in their learning;
what you work at when young bears fruit only when old.

About the poet: Lu You
Lu You is the most prolific poet in Chinese history, with nearly ten thousand poems. Throughout his life he urged the Southern Song to recover the north from the Jurchen Jin; patriotism and rural life are his two great themes.
